run for mayor because chicago election laws require cdzs to live in the -- candidates to live in the city for a year leading up to the election. the sticking point in oddleson's mind is the fact that emanuel was living in washington in the year preceding his mayoral bid. but oddleson is one of nearly two dozen lawyers and concerned sit glns peppering rahm emanuel with questions some of which may or may not be relevant to the dispute. >> are you claiming there is some error or inaccuracy in the interest that is conducted? >> no, i'm not. i'm looking at two documents the second document board of ethics form for the day he filed it because it clearly shows november 9, 2010. >> so not exactly the most rivetting testimony. pouring over records that were filed with the chicago election board of commissioners. tax documents and real estate records as well. of course, notes can, the north side home of rahm emanuel that

was rented out during the time that he was in washington, d.c. it will be at least a couple of days before all of the testimony is in. and then the hearing officer will make a recommendation to the full three member election board of commissioners. at 69 west washington, julian crews, wgn news. >> thank you. the mayor of springfield was found dead from a gunshot wound this morning. timothy dablan was discovered dead inside his home this morning. police say they received a 911 call reporting a shooting just minutes before. the illinois state police are investigating. dablan was supposed to appear in court this morning in a pending estate case involving his late cousin. in october the state journal register in springfield reported dablan owed federal government nearly $90,000 in unpaid taxes and liens were filed against his home. the mayor blamed the problem over a dispute with the irs. two men are charged with kidnapping a man who was found

dead in chicago's humboldt park neighborhood. 45-year-old francisco faivela was taken from his home at cermak and keeler saturday afternoon. he was rehabbing a building at the time. his body was discovered inside a vehicle in the garage at thomas and springfield last night. police say he had been badly beaten. two men are now in custody. 38-year-old darnell stokes and 34-year-old keith watts. stokes and watts are charged with aggravated kidnapping and unlawful aggravated restraint. watts is charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. this very not been charged with the murder. a court hearing is scheduled today for a southwest suburban man accused of am dur- - murdering his wife. allen kustok is held on $2 million bond. he pled not guilty to the murder of his wife. she was found shot to death last september. kustok told police his wife took her own life. ballistics tests show a gun used in a tanning salon hold up

attempt matches the weapon used by the so-called honey bee gunman who killed one man and wounded two others last october. wgn's erin mendez is live at will county courthouse in joliet. good afternoon and there was the ballistic match and now confirmation that the suspect gary amaya's light blue pick up was found both on site in indiana related to the shootings back in october and an adjacent parking lot from that tanning salon in orland park. today, investigators say they cross-referencing several old cold cases to see if there are other links to amaya. at top of that list, the lane bryant murders in 2008. dna is being process specific to that case. 48-year-old gary amaya is now the sole suspect in the honey bee shootings in october that took the life of one man and injured two others. yesterday detectives scoured his home in downstate rankin. neighbors describe him as reclusive. knowing little about the man living across the cornfield for

over a decade. >> in a town of 400 people, everybody knows everybody's business. this guy just kind of got in the corner so far he was just overlooked. >> reporter: that changed saturday when amaya tried to rob this salon. jason mcdaniel tried to reason with him. on set with wgn this morning, mcdaniels says amaya wasn't interested. >> there was no type of okay, give me the money, i want to leave. there was no type of hurry. very calm. very like there to hurt somebody i think. that's thank was his intended goal. >> surveillance camera inside l.a. tan caught the quick struggle before mcdaniel shot amaya in the stomach. and now detectives are confirming another bizarre link to this case. a woman came into the chicago police department reporting that a man fitting amaya's

description fired a shot at her around 1:30 in the morning. detectives say it was her purse found in amaya's truck later that same day. the story continues to unfold out here. in joliet, wgn news. the winter storm that brought snow, cold and bone chilling winds to the mid west is moving toward the northeast today with more snow possible in parts of ohio, new york and pennsylvania. the storm buried much of northwest indiana where more than 100 vehicles were stuck on snow covered roozed. those highways are back open today and authorities say the last of the stranded motorists were rescued. but many roads are still snow packed. the federal government is suing a west suburban school district for making a teacher choose between her religion and her job. sapphira khan requested time off to make a pilgrimage to mecca. according to the justice department, the berkeley school district denied the request twice in 2008 saying it was unrelated to her professional duties.

she later resigned. the department said the district violated civil rights act of 1964 for not accommodating her religious practices. lawsuit seeks back pay and unspecified damages that school district has not commented. governor quinn's new chief of staff has ties to rod blagojevich and tony rezko. jack ran the department of commerce and economic opportunity under blagojevich and was a financial officer for one of rezko's companies. rezko was found guilty in 2008 of shaking down companies that wanted state contracts. he is expected to be sentenced next month. he becomes quinn's third chief of staff in less than four months. cook county board president issues an executive order she claims will save tens of millions of dollars. toni preckwinkle put on hold what she calls nonessential projects and services. 9 executive order covers 96 approved project was price tag of roughly $500 million. it also covers 85 proposed projects with a cost of nearly $200 million. preckwinkle says at least three

will clear congress by christmas. bill advanced yesterday by a margin of 83 to 15. it includes a continuation of bush era tax cut for all americans renewal of unemployment benefits, one year cut in social security taxes and substantial estate tax relief for wealthier americans. house democrat oz posed the estate tax provisions. they will meet this evening to talk about possible changes to the bill. virginia's attorney general is praising a court's decision that went in his favor concerning the controversial health care law. he challenged the law claiming the federal government doesn't have the right to force people to buy health insurance. yesterday, a federal judge agreed. the obama administration is expected to appeal the ruling and the case may end up in the u.s. supreme court. >> you have to stay within the boundaries of the constitution and no power given the congress or the president to order you and i and other americans to buy any product. >> president obama says ruling

targeted because of wikileak's decision last month. a ruling on the extradition case may not come for several weeks. american doctor is in a military court in maryland today. facing a court marshal for refusing to perform his duties because he believes president obama is not elable to -- eligible to be commander-in- chief. lieutenant connel terrance lincoln part of so the called berther's movement. this group questions whether president obama is a natural born citizen. charged with refusing to deploy to afghanistan because he doubts president obama's authority. new trier high school's plan to get former defense secretary donald rumsfeld an alumni award is causing controversy. rumsfeld is a 1950 graduate of new trier and one of ten people chosen to receive the first outstanding alumni award. former board trusty and new trier heights senior class president are asking the board to reconsider the decision. they say rumsfeld doesn't deserve the award because of

buy is weighing on its shares today despite wrong black friday sales for mobile phone. and the only reason why people were snapping up tvs this holiday season was because they were lost leaders. items that retailers take a loss on in hopes of getting people to buy other products without best buy lowering the annual earnings forecast today and reporting an unexpected 4.4% drop in third quarter profit. but on a brighter note when it comes to profit, huffingten post the news site that began in 2005 is about to post its first annual profit this year. founder arianna huffingten said the site that bears her name has grown to 26 million unique monthly visitors. on wall street, we were seeing stocks rising all morning today after retail sales gross topped estimates and investors awaited outcome of the federal reserve policy meeting which starts later today. live at the cme group in

if you own a 2011 sienna van you might want to look for a recall notice. company says its new siennas may have a problem with the emergency brakes. pressing the brake pedal may damage a switch and knock out the dash light that alerts the driver when the emergency brake is engaged. these letter goes out next month free repairs begin in february. plans to privatize midway airport are on hold until chicago's next mayor decides whether to lease it to private operators. a deal to lease midway for $2.5 billion collapsed in april of 2009 during the global financial crisis. after announcing that he would not seek re-election, mayor daley said he abandoned attempts to privatize midway. faa granted the city a fifth extension to gain privatization

process. the time line is expected by july 31. a new way to lock in low ticket prices for your next flight. continental airlines owns a program called fare lock. the service lets you hold reservations and ticket fares on some domestic and international destinations. hold sticks for evan days even if you don't purchase the ticket. the fare lock will cost you between 5 and $9 per flight. the nation' airlines are make billions of dollars off fees for luggage and ticket changes. the first nine months of this year airlines collected $2.6 billion in baggage fees. more than 1 30eu $7 billion came from ticket changes. delta has collected the most. more than $1.25 billion. southwest does not charge to check the first two bags but still made $22 million for additional luggage. donations to the salvation army's red kettles are lacking this year. in schawg donations are down 13% compared to this time last

a hard freeze warning is in effect in much of florida. the spring water on green beans and sweet corn and many are bringing in helicopters to hover over the fields forcing warm air down. just a few degrees 67 difference in temperature can help prevent plant damage. florida is the nation's largest winter producer of sweet corn. last year's crop brought in $227 million. >> nothing sweet about this freeze. >> you know, this is an outgrowth of that massive storm that's gone across the central

u.s. the last couple of days. incredible lake snow. we will show you numbers. >> warm air mass anywhere? >> warmer air coming through the plains. it will moderate the cold a little bit but the cold will wash back in again. so we have no long term break in it. florida, it was colder this morning as those of you watching on wgn america know down to 36 this morning in miami. 32 tampa. 28 in orlando. and interestingly yesterday it was warmer in caribou, maine, than it was in orlando, florida. because caribou maine had a record of 55 on the east side of this mammoth storm gone into the eastern u.s. and central u.s. while it was only 39 in orlando. look at the pictures and we thank each of you who have set these. valerie cook offers us this one from knox, indiana, near the epicenter of this lake snow. the snow numbers are amazing. in cortland, illinois, amelia captured ground blizzard on sunday.

multicar accident out there involving semis and we have ground blizzard conditions despite disappointing snow numbers in this area. didn't get the snow here but they did in valparaiso where joanne goss captured this shot and carolyn captures the lake snow's riding into whiting, indiana, at height of the storm on sunday and from westville which is absolutely at ground zero on the snow. matt who is a meteorology student. this is his car buried in the snowbank. and marcus from westville captured the snow, too. he had drifts there that buried cars. yesterday the national guard, the indiana national guard and state police and local police spent the whole day pulling people that were snowbound out of cars in the indiana snow belt and we have seen some of the clouds off in the distance even as we enjoyed beautiful sunshine in chicago and the big story here is cold air and we have another snow system we are watching for wednesday night and thursday. cold, the big story in the

chicago area had sub zero temperatures last night out in the suburbs. we will show you those. and up to 33 inches of snow is the latest number out of the snow belt in indiana with wednesday night and thursday snow headed in our direction. here is the cold. these are current temperatures. it's 47 in miami. 45 at tampa. we were at 17. see how the coal air kind of slices into the eastern u.s. warming a little out to the west but that sets up the overrunning that will snow on us wednesday night, thursday and there is more cold air up north where all of this is coming from. see, the warm up in the plains states. so the temps will come back a little bit. we ought to be flirting with freezing by thursday only to fall back again a bit after that for the weekend. the winds are north, northwest at 8. that's a big story. they are way down. have about a third of the wind velocity we had yesterday and that takes away that windchill. look at some the lows in our weather bug network from freeport, morris, de kalb, rochelle, all below zero this morning in the suburbs.

three below in minooka, sugar grove, kankakee and lowell, indiana. and it's 19 right now at o'hare headed for a 20-degree high today. only in the teens yesterday. 19 at midway airport. 21 at blue island and 15 in northwest suburban mchenry with the windchills right here plotted for you on this man. well, here are the lake snows. still blowing into areas of michigan and indiana. they shifted east where the epicenter of the snow is laporte county and stark county and berrian county still in the snow. areas little farther east are getting in on the snow right now. look at some of the totals here. in indiana it's 50 miles southeast of chicago's loop and about 12 miles east of valparaiso, indiana. they have 33 inches of snow out of this. westival, illinois, 29 inches. laporte 25, too. that's the city. one of the outlying communities had 24/7. new buffalo and berrian county

michigan, 18, three. and kings bury indiana had 15.1 inches of snow and blue around and it's still doing that. but not with the gusto it did the last couple of days. this is our model foash of snow through this evening. watch how the area shrinks. that's because of set up is breaking down and makes the lake snow. these are winds where they are bright colors and winds are blowing strongly and winds follow the isobars above the surface so it's blowing into the snow belt. see how the winds die down and that's why the lake snow will die down too. it's three days that this area is pummeled by snow. and that's after the storm went through here and took part of the roof off navy pier and sent the waters of lake michigan almost three feet higher because of sustained northerly winds that put the water over lake shore drive on sunday. we will say good-bye and hello system snow crossing the mississippi by wednesday evening and here tomorrow night. and we will show you some thinking on the accumulations from the different models.

here the satellite view of the system that will come into the country and affect us. here it's clouds already crossing the plains as you can see right there and there are weather advisories over 25 states right now. not only for the departing storm but for the new one coming in. this won't be a super storm for us but it might be enough to lay down a couple of inches and we will update you on that on the update here coming up. sunny, cold and much less windy today. with the lake snow continuing. one to three inches more in sections of berrian, cass and st. joe counties. berrian, cass, in michigan and st. joe where south bend is. east of the area that was hard hit yesterday. high 21. and we expect northwest winds to be lighter. tonight clear and frigid. a fast drop to zero inland. 14 in the loop and it will be about five at o'hare. the winds will be dropping off tonight and then tomorrow sunshine but increasing afternoon clouds with snow at night. some accumulation late night and snowy periods go back to

winning streak to 6 last night but not before a couple of scary moments. jumped out to an early lead on the pacers behind a big first quarter from carlos boozer. boozer finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds and getting his third double-double. indiana kept getting closer to the fourth when rose and boozer took control. scary homes late in the game. rose dropped to the floor after rolling his ankle. but returned to the game. only a few minutes later he crashed on the floor on a drive to the hoop spreading his wrist. x-rays after the game came back. and they were negative. bulls win 92-73. the cliff lee sweepstakes are over. he is going back to his old team. lee is reportedly signed a five year deeld with philadelphia phillies worth $100 million. he turned down a 7 year $150 million deal from the yankees. lee pitched for the phillys two years ago. he joins an imposing starting

rotation that includes roy halladay, roy oswell and cole hamels. the streak is over a shoulder injury kept brett favre out of the vikings game last night ending the conservative start streak at 297 games. his vikings loss to the giants and in monday night football the ravens beat the texans in overtime. clean up crews were at metrodome yesterday to assess the damage of that collapsed roof. the vikings organization is determined to fix the roof in time for monday night's bears/vikings game. if the metrodome roof cannot be fixed in time, the game will be played at university of minnesota's tcf bank stadium. university will have to get their stadium ready since it's been shut down for the season. university officials have said this process could take at least five days. that's a look at sports. your live illinois lottery drawing is next.

this film is rated pg. in medical watch, living in an apartment building can be a significant source of secondhand smoke. a new study looked at children and teenagers whose parents eanged questions about smoking and where they lived. 85% of children who lived in apartments had higher levels of a nicotene by-product in their blood and even if no one smoked in their own apartment. researchers suspect smoke seeps between walls or common air ducts in apartment building. less education people have the greater their risk of deadly heart failure. a new study followed nearly 20,000 adult for 20 years. researchers found that people with more than ten years schooling were 39% less likely to suffer from heart failure. study suggests that lower

time for our lunch break. the owner and founder of goldy's scones joins us with a perfect soup recipe that can be frozen for leftovers but we will eat it all today. >> i hope so. >> perfect for weather like this. >> thank you very much. >> and what do you call this recipe? >> it's a chicken verde soup. >> okay. what do we need to do? >> what we did, i just -- you previously do is you bake your chicken in the oven with a little bit of salsa verde over it and a little water and a few spices. and you bake that for maybe 15, 20 minutes. then what you do is you start prepare your soup and add a little bit of canalla oil already and then i'm going to add a medium sized onion. and a couple tablespoons of minced garlic. so we have a lot of garlic in there. it tastes so good. and then we stir that.

and we get that going and we will -- until the onions are transparent. maybe ten minutes, something like that. >> sure. that takes a few minutes. >> and then you just actually it's such an easy soup, anybody can make it. i mean, most of these things are having in your cabinet anyhow. we have corn and we have white beans and we are going to just add all this to it. >> and this is the order that you add beans before the corn? >> yeah. >> and we will just add the corn. and then we will add the -- let tacook for a few minutes. mix-- let that cook a few minutes. mix that in. we vol some cumin. we have two teaspoons of cumin and then two teaspoons of chili powder to salt and peppers and then if you want to make it a little bit spicier, go right ahead, add some more spice to

it maybe a little bit more chili powder depending on what you like. then we've got some green chilis. add that. and we have some rotell which is tomatoes and also some more peppers and stuff. and we will mix that in really well. and then you want to probably just start seeing -- >> chicken broth. where is the soup going to come in here. then we have a couple of containers of chicken broth. >> i think i read in your information that you can make this a little less sodium but using less sodium chicken broth. >> absolutely, you can do that. you have a problem like that and it tastes just fine. you don't have to worry about it. and we will add the other container.

next weather system crosses the mountains. high pressure comes in and that's why the winds have died down but watch how the clouds come in tomorrow and it's snowing here by late tomorrow night. and it will snow end of thursday morning and become more flurries and light snow in the afternoon. this is a look at the accumulation forecast. two different models here. first you can see the lake snow going into michigan. then here comes the system snow. this model puts down two, 2.3 inches. here is another model. just giving you an idea, the range of a forecast looking at. up to five inches in rockford off this one. we are still in that early stage of this as we were with the storm last week and that one ended up not producing much snow at all. there is the cold air. lifts out a little bit on thursday but then see it kind of wash back in here again and at no time in this ten day animation do we get rid of the cold air. the place to be is the southwest where there were record high temperatures
